For more than a quarter of a century, I have been privileged to be able to call Congressman John Lewis a colleague, a mentor, a dear friend and … an inspiration.
When I arrived in the U.S. House in 1993, John Lewis was one of the first members of Congress I met and was extraordinarily generous with his time, knowledge and insight. In the ensuing years, I was honored to stand alongside him -- fighting for fairness, opportunity and decency in our nation.
Serving with John Lewis was an honor -- and like citizens across the nation, I am continually inspired by his strength and dignity, and by his pursuit of justice for all. As he takes on this new fight, he will continue to inspire all of us.
When I left the House to come home to UMass, John said we had more work to do and more bridges to cross – and our friendship and partnership has carried on.
Working with this truly extraordinary American and public servant has been one of the great gifts of my life.
I pray for Congressman Lewis’ health and recovery – and look forward to many more years of close association with him.
